Jazzing it up

The Center City Jazz Festival, with 17 bands at four venues, is scheduled all day Saturday. Beginning at 1 p.m. and lasting over 10 hours, more than 50 musicians will perform as part of a plan launched by trombonist Ernest Stuart, who plans to donate tickets to high school students. It is hoped that the Center City Jazz Festival will fill the void left by the recently discontinued West Oak Lane Jazz Festival and the closing of Ortlieb's Jazz Haus. Walk to fight cancer

The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation will host the eighth annual Sandy Sprint 5K Run/Walk & Canine Sprint at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Fairmount Park. Organizers said that last year, 2,000 walkers helped to raise $185,000 for testing and treatments. This year, 3,000 walkers is the goal for the nonprofit organization. The Phillie Phanatic is scheduled to make an appearance. On-site race registration is at the Please Touch Museum, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, beginning at 7 a.m. Registration on race day is $30, $20 for children under age 12, and $15 for canines. The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education's Naturepalooza, an Earth Day event, is scheduled 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The free festival will offer live entertainment, wild animal shows, art projects, games, a native plant sale, nature walks, and more. The Plants, a four-piece Philadelphia-based band for kids, will headline a rotating schedule of acts on the center's pavilion stage. Volunteers from the Society of Women Environmental Professionals of Greater Philadelphia will host a science station featuring hands-on science projects for children. The Philadelphia Antiques Show, which began in 1962, is among the premier shows for Americana. Sponsored by Drexel Morgan & Co., it offers a wide array of decorative pieces and furnishings from 58 dealers. The show offers the chance to purchase jewelry, textiles, paintings, furniture, porcelain, and folk art. The show's new home is the Pennsylvania Convention Center, near 12th and Arch Streets, where visitors and collectors can explore remarkable collections, attend educational lectures, view exquisite designer rooms sponsored by 1stdibs.com, and experience the 2012 loan exhibition, "Where History Meets Medicine."
