Sideshow: Affleck and Garner's new 'fiery angel'

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner told People.com yesterday that their brand-new baby girl, born Jan. 6 in Lalaland, has been named Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck. SREA, who joins a 3-year-old sis, Violet, is a fiery angel: Her name is derived from the Hebrew word seraphim, which means "fiery ones." According to biblical mythology, the seraphim are God's highest-ranking angels.

Hope the girl can live up to her name.

Nomination for local designer

Springfield (Delaware County) High School alum Amy Westcott has been nominated for the 11th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards in the contemporary film category for her work on The Wrestler, says the L.A. Times. Westcott, best known for her work on HBO's Entourage, is up against Sex and the City's Patricia Field, and the designers for Iron Man, Mamma Mia! and Slumdog Millionaire. Awards will be presented Feb. 17 in L.A.

Mandel back to work

Howie Mandel, 53, hospitalized in Toronto on Monday for an irregular heartbeat, says he's feeling better and will be back at work today on his new show Howie Do it!

An 'Idol' couple fly to Splitsville

Alas, even being part of American Idol can't save one from heartache: In Touch Weekly reports that Idolators Kimberly Caldwell (season two reject) and David Cook (season seven winner), both 26, who first hooked up in May, split up before just the holidays.

"The couple remain good friends and being very private people, appreciate their privacy at this time," Kim's rep says.

Emma, on our obsession with youth

Last Chance Harvey star Emma Thompson, who turns 50 next year, tells More magazine that she refuses to make herself look young just to please Tinseltown.

"We're in this awful youth-driven thing now where everybody needs to look 30 at 60, and you go, 'Don't you get it? This is the law of diminishing returns. You are creating what can only be described as a great big cat-o'-nine-tails to flog yourself with as you get older,' " says Emma, painting quite a vivid picture of whips. "The trick is to age honestly and gracefully and make it look great, so that everyone looks forward to it."

LiLo's love life: Clear as mud

The gossip surrounding the alleged romantic entanglement between Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson refuses to die. In the latest, LiLo tells Life & Style Weekly that although she and Sam haven't strutted their stuff together in public lately, they are still together: "It's healthy to miss someone." An anon source tells the mag that the couple is dialing things down, taking a breather, giving each other space, and so on. Meanwhile, LiLo has banked some cash for doing a print ad campaign for Italian clothing label Fornarina.

Idol judge says "Yes!"

In happier Idol-related romance news, the show's newbie judge, Kara DioGuardi, 38, who was scheduled to make her Idol debut last night, has said "yes" to boyfriend Mike McCuddy. Kara's rep tells People that the 34-year-old Mike, who left his first profession as a schoolteacher to become a general contractor, proposed to his love on Dec. 8. A wedding date has yet to be set.

Kara previously told Access Hollywood that she plans to look out for Paula Abdul on the show. "There's a little girl power going on," she said. "[Paula and I] kind of side against the guys."

'Twilight' sequel update

MTV says that the young and lovely Vanessa Hudgens, 20, has auditioned to play werewolf Leah Clearwater in the planned Twilight sequel, New Moon. V.H. would reportedly be a foil to werewolf Jacob Black, played by star returnee Taylor Lautner. The news has sparked debate among gossipers and fans who wonder if Vanessa is mean enough, feral enough - hairy enough - to play a werewolf.

The JoBros' Grammy gift

E!Online reports that first-time Grammy nominees the Jonas Brothers have just signed to perform a mystery song (can you stand the suspense?) at the Feb. 8 awards show, which will be telecast live on CBS from the Staples Center in L.A.

More inaugural fun

The Kid's Inaugural ball, which is scheduled to be seen Monday on the Disney Channel, will feature Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Bow Wow. And Tuesday's Neighborhood Ball, set to air on ABC, will star hip-hop's king 'n' queen, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, along with Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Alicia Keys, Shakira and Stevie Wonder.
