Sideshow: Wedding bells to peal for Ellen

Just hours after the California Supreme Court struck down a state law banning same-sex marriage on Thursday, TV talker Ellen DeGeneres announced that she and actress Portia de Rossi plan to wed.

Ellen, who shared the news during a taping of an episode to air yesterday, was met with thunderous applause and a standing O. "I can't wait to get married," Ellen later told the Advocate. "We all deserve the same rights."

Taylor heads to heaven

American Idol superhero Taylor Hicks, whose fan base goes by the name the Soul Patrol, will make his Broadway debut as Teen Angel in Grease starting on June 6.

Hicks, 31, who says the role is "a classic fit for a classic performer," tells the AP he will add "soulful flavor" to his rendition of "Beauty School Dropout."

"It's a big number, and, you know, I've made some pretty grand entrances before," Hicks says. "And this one is probably the grandest entrance I've had in my career." Hicks said he's working on his second album.

Cannes holds its breath

The talk of the town this year at the Cannes Film Festival isn't some frothy French sexistential romance, Italian soap opera or Germany's definitive cinematic Gesamtkunstwerk.

No, it's good ol' Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will have its world premiere tomorrow night.

Fans are on tenterhooks since director Steven Spielberg has kept the project so secret. Ooh, the excitement!

'Idol' tour headed our way

Speaking of Idol, this season's top two warblers, David Archuleta and David Cook, are both on board for this summer's American Idols Live! Tour, which will start July 1 in Glendale, Ariz. The tour will hit Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Aug. 2 and Philly's Wachovia Center on Aug. 13. Tix go on sale at 10 a.m. today. Info: http://tour.americanidol.com/

The Kids are(n't) alright . . .

Yes, those aging geezers who sang some kind of mishmash medley of boy-band hits yesterday on the Today show were indeed the reunited boy band New Kids on the Block. The boymen sounded a bit off, but that didn't matter a wit: More than 3,000 screaming, screeching, boy-besotted fans braved the rain to watch their outdoor performance.

Sarah: I'm not Carrie!

Sarah Jessica Parker yesterday told reporters at the Berlin premiere of Sex and the City: The Movie that unlike her character Carrie Bradshaw, she's not a slave to fashion.

"I am a mother, wife and working woman in the first place, clothes do not play such a big role in my life as they do in Carrie's," she said.

Restaurants & Food
Cooking has perhaps never been as popular - or important - as it is today. Between the Food Network and the piles of newly published cookbooks, it seems everybody who wants to cook can find a niche.
Living
Paddling a canoe from Long Beach Island to Washington, D.C., Margo Pellegrino maneuvered through toxic shellfish, algae clumps, brown scum, floating litter and dead catfish.
