Rapper denies shooting

Grammy-nominated rapper

Remy Ma

pleaded not guilty yesterday in the shooting of a 23-year-old woman in a posh Manhattan neighborhood. Bail was set at $250,000. Yesterday afternoon she was sent to Riker's Island while the judge reviewed her bail offer.

Remy Ma, 26, (real name Remy Smith), promoted on her Web site as an up-from-the-streets artist who escaped the hard-knock life of the Bronx to become a hip-hop star, faces charges of attempted murder, assault and weapon possession. Her attorney, Scott Leemon, said, "I ask everyone to keep an open mind. Things are not always as they seem."

A 911 call reporting gunfire Saturday in the city's Meatpacking District led police to a woman with a gunshot wound to her lower torso just before 4 a.m. Three blocks away, officers discovered a luxury SUV owned by Remy Ma; the vehicle had been involved in a single-car crash and abandoned, police said.

The victim, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, was listed in stable condition at St. Vincent's Hospital. Remy Ma was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 summer smash "Lean Back." Last year she released a solo album, There's Something About Remy.
