Philly school cafeteria workers get a raise under new contract

Cafeteria workers ratified a two-year contract extension Monday with the Philadelphia School District that will raise wages for the district's lowest-paid employees, official said.

Cafeteria workers ratified a two-year contract extension Monday with the Philadelphia School District that will raise wages for the district's lowest-paid employees, official said.

The contract with Local 634 of the School Cafeteria Employees Union UniteHere was set to expire Sept. 30, 2017, but is now extended to 2019.

The labor agreement also covers student climate staff, who work on school safety issues.

"This agreement guarantees wage and economic improvements over the next three years, and will raise the pay of our lowest paid employees," said Superintendent William R. Hite.

The deal increases hourly wages from the current $11.13 to $12.85 by the end of the contract. It also provides for a 3 percent ratification bonus, makes improvements to the health and welfare fund, and changes how student climate staff are scheduled.

"We are very pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with the district," said union organizer Nicole Hunt.
