Police are investigating reports of hazing by football players in one of the region's elite school districts.

The players are current or former members of the Conestoga High School team, according to the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District in Chester County.

"The District places the highest priority on student safety and, to that end, is cooperating in any way it can with law enforcement officials," school officials posted on the district's website.

District officials and the Tredyffrin Township Police Department directed questions to the Chester County District Attorney's Office, but DA Tom Hogan declined comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

In private rating services, Conestoga has been ranked at or near the top for academic performance.

In fall 2014, the Central Bucks School District canceled the football season for Central Bucks High School West and fired the team's head coach because of hazing.

Included in the reported hazing were incidents of rookie players forced to touch their teammates' genitals while clothed and younger players wetted down and covered with powder, said David Weitzel, superintendent at Central Bucks.

Police announced in December 2014 they would not file criminal charges.

Also in fall 2014, school officials canceled the football season for Sayreville War Memorial High School in Middlesex County, N.J. because of hazing. Seven players faced sexual assault and hazing charges over inappropriate touching of four other players.
