  • Rutgers president urged to resign
  • Rutgers University assistant basektball coach Jimmy Martelli resigned Wednesday, the day head coach Mike Rice was fired, a university spokesman confirmed Thursday.

The spokesman could not provide details of the resignation, saying he was not aware whether any reasons were cited in the move.

Martelli is the son of St. Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli. He was also an assistant coach under Rice at Robert Morris University, before Rice hired him in 2010.

Martelli was seen on video in at least one incident, ESPN reported Thursday, pushing a player and using an anti-gay slur. According to the ESPN report, he was known as "Baby Rice" for his coaching style.

Martelli said in a statement he was "sickened that as an assistant coach I contributed in any way to an unacceptable culture," and he apologized to the players "from the bottom of my heart."

The news of Martelli's resignation came Thursday as pressure mounted on the university for further action.

New Jersey's two top legislators increased pressure today over the firing of head men's basketball coach Mike Rice.

Senate President Steve Sweeney (D., Gloucester) called for Tim Pernetti, the school's athletic director, to either resign or be fired.

"It is becoming abundantly clear that Tim Pernetti cannot remain in his position as athletic director at Rutgers. For the good of the school, its students and its faculty, he should either resign or be removed from his position immediately," Sweeney said a statement released Thursday afternoon. "This incident will continue to hang over Rutgers like a dark cloud for weeks, months and perhaps years to come."

Separately, Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D., Essex) continued to call for hearings into the decision-making process, saying on ESPN that she expects them "in the next couple of weeks."

Oliver had issued a statement Tuesday supporting the decision to fire Rice over a video of him kicking and shoving players and making anti-gay slurs. She also proposed hearings to determine "why Mr. Rice was not dismissed sooner and how exactly that decision was made."

On ESPN's Outside The Lines program this afternoon, Oliver stated definitively that "I am going to have legislative hearings," leveraging the budget process if necessary.

"The first concern here is finding out exactly how the decision was made not to dismiss Mr. Rice late last year and allow him to continue overseeing college students," Oliver said in a statement Thursday. "The answers to questions on the state's investment in Rutgers athletics and state budget allocations could very well depend on that explanation from the Rutgers administration."

A spokesman for the university declined to comment on the statements by Sweeney and Oliver.

The increased pressure comes the day after Rice was fired. He had previously been suspended for three games, ordered to attend anger management counseling, and lost $75,000 in fines and lost pay.

He will collect a $100,000 bonus for lasting through the season, the university confirmed Thursday, because the bonus is contractually obligated. Rice's five-year contract included the bonus for completing the 2012-13 season, along with bonuses for winning games and graduating players. He was paid $662,500 last year.

The school has not held a press conference since the video's appearance Tuesday.

      "Members of the Rutgers Community:

This morning I issued the following statement regarding the decision to terminate the employment of Scarlet Knights men’s basketball coach Mike Rice. Because of the seriousness of the situation and the national attention it has drawn, I wanted to let you know about this decision as soon as possible.

“Rutgers University has a long and proud history as one of the nation’s most diverse and welcoming academic institutions. Coach Rice’s abusive language and actions are deeply offensive and egregiously violate the university’s core values.

“When video excerpts of basketball practices were reviewed last fall by Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, he immediately notified me and sought the advice of internal and outside counsel. The university hired an independent investigator to look into this matter thoroughly. Based on the external investigator's findings and recommendations, Tim and I agreed that Coach Rice should be suspended, penalized $75,000 in fines and lost salary, ordered to undergo anger management counseling, and put on notice that his behavior would be closely monitored. Tim Pernetti also made it clear to Coach Rice that there would be zero tolerance for additional infractions. Tim kept me fully apprised and I supported his actions.

“Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior. I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University. Therefore, Tim Pernetti and I have jointly decided to terminate Mike Rice’s employment at Rutgers.”

      Sincerely,

      Robert L. Barchi
      President

Pernetti just got fired and this guy has gotta go next. I could swear that Pernetti said that Barchi also reviewed the tape in December, 2012. If I am incorrect, I apologize but I'm almost positive. If I'm right, someboday seems to be lying here.

Yo, so you didn't ask to see a video of your head coach's behavior...gee, what I don't know won't hurt me huh? the AD said you saw the video so I guess he lied? You acted just like Graham Spanier did at Penn State...no guts no glory, just a very small man trying to protect his white shirt and tie.

Good comment. These coaches are absolute evil pigs. I was beyond shocked to see that evil SOB, Mike Rice, physically and emotionally abusing college kids. That evil SOB is a disgrace to humanity. If Barchi was involved in any way - he should be banned from coaching for life, too.

Let this be a warning for other other coaches out there.

      Agreed. Both good posts.

Rice is Martelli's 'mentor'? OMG. Seems like little of the old man rubbed off on 'lil' Mart. And when you watch the vid - clearly has little man's disease.

One of the players should've popped these coaches. And if they had, we all know what would've happened then.

All coaches beware - at all level's in all sports. The camera doesn't lie.

I wonder how Bobby Knight was able to pull all kinds of stunts and still held onto his job at Indiana. The only thing he didn't do was smash a chair over someone's noggin.

You don't know anything about Knight, so don't act like you do.

Toxic - because he won. Big difference, You win, you can do anything you want. And "Ms." Lou - I would hope it doesn't take a coach b buggering an 11 year old to warrant dismissal - although in college sports, that's probably about what it would take. Both these guys are disgusting human beings who SHOULD spend some time unemployed. Then hopefully karma will take over and their boss will treat them like the pile of **** they are,

Martelli is a little punk. I'd love to see that punk try that on someone who could retaliate. He probably learned this BS from his punk dad.
