A number of school, union, and political leaders in the Philadelphia region were not eager Friday to let the National Rifle Association be their guide on how to protect students and staff from the type of tragedy that occurred last week in a Connecticut school.

Anyone of those interviewed who oppose armed police in schools would be damned happy to have them if a madman opened fire in a school that they happened to be in. Boru- This is true, but that so rarely happens we still believe that we can make our schools safer by keeping the thousands of low paid under trained sub par employees that currently have school security guard positions unarmed.
I recall an Archie Bunker Public Service Announcement done on his show. Archie proposed giving out guns to every passenger who flew to combat the rash of airline hijackings that occurred in the 1970's. Of course it was an Reductio ad absurdum (Latin: "reduction to absurdity").
Placing hundreds of thousands of guns in our nations schools is absurd. DarnelX - Those "in power" never want to give it up. Why would Mayors, Unions and Schools wish to cede power...I mean after all, they're so effective these days aren't they???
BTW, could you imaging the brainwashed ignorant racist teacher that bullied and insulted the child wearing a Romney T-shirt with a gun?!?
That teacher probably can't even spell Gun.... Professor1982 - Those "in power" never want to give it up. Professor1982 - This "professor" is like Chatterer the Red Squirrel with the Republican rhetoric on this site. The election is over dude. Take a breather until 2016.
Bobski5000 - Folks, our fabric is torn. We need to recognize that "Sandy Hook" type events are part of our reality, and have been. Talk and faith in The Lord alone will not suffice. We must protect and defend our children with the same vigor and tenacity as the evil that prey on them. Some of our local political leaders lack the will to actively stand and fight. Not with words, but with action. The Mayor stated that we will not have shoot outs amongst our schools. He's right. We'll suffer massacres instead. Because no one will be there to prevent it. Understand this; the police mostly react to crime, but properly trained and equipped security personnel and system prevent it. Hard choices must be made. Gun control will be a pacifier.
Seasoned_Vet - If we were to put 1 armed guard (hardly security in large schools of 1500 ) in every school in America, it would cost around $5,500,000,000.00 a year. So "professor", are you willing to help foot the bill?
http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2012/12/21/cop_in_every_school_how_much_would_wayne_lapierre_s_proposal_cost.html daxtremesolja - Cnsidering the fact that the majority of our school "police" are retired municiple police officers, with prior training, knowledge, and skill; that figure is grossly exaggerated. They are already in the schools to do "the job". All is required is to properly equip and direct them. They are receiving benefits and pay that isn't bad considering most are receiving a pension. Exchange the clumsy looking uniform for a sport jacket and khakis, give them a radio on a police frequency with their on band; so that each detail can communicate with other schools and the police. Add cameras at strategic points and your up and running with minimal cost with maximum return on investment. This city waste way more than what this would cost daily.
Seasoned_Vet - Do you honestly think that would be more than the passage and enforcement of an Assault Weapons Ban? Hell, it hasn't even gotten to Congress yet, and just talking about it has probably cost the taxpayers over $1 million. This hypocrisy over expenditures is staggering. When did all of a sudden did Democrats start caring about how much money something costs?
spillthewine - I'd rather pay that bill with my tax dollars then sending almost 1/2 trillion tax dollars to companies on the verge of Bankruptcy like Solendra to name one. At least 1500 more people employed than that bankrupt company!O stimulis or other liberal wastes of money!
- And another thing if we did spend the money; how much is a child's life worth to you? And the math involved with the 1500 divided into 5,500,000,000 means $366,666 per year per person. I'll take that job!
- First of all, the madman will shoot the armed security guard in the face, then enter the building to mow everyone else down.
The NRA thinks all Americans are as stupid as their supporters. Their leader is an irrational nutcase himself. If anyone should be committed to the funny farm - it's him.
Ban deadly assault semi-automatics - or be content living in a war zone at the mercy of madmen terrorists - partly created by the NRA.
No one is saying gun elimination - it's gun control.
The NRA is completely out-of-control - they need to be controlled by our leaders because they have jeopardized our children's safety by letting any madman have access to military style weapons of mass destruction.
Foxclove5 - Ban? This would not be the fist "assault weapons" ban in this country. The first was September 1994 to September 2004. It did nothing to keep "assault weapons" out of the hands of the wicked. For example, the north Hollywood bank robbery. Police across the country sieze illegally obtained high powered weapons from people who could not other wise purchase any weapon legally. I agree not every person should be in possession of every type of weapon. But a ban is an used bandage that won't work. Columbine was commited with handguns and shotguns purchased legally during the assault weapons ban. Virgina Tech was commited with handguns purchased legally after the assault weapons ban expired. The ban would have only affected the magazine capacity. But would have not precented the crime. The Batman movie shooting was commited by a person using an assualt style weapon - yes. But who has mental deficientcies. Just like all the other perpatrators. Mental illness and criminal prosecution are a problem in this country. I agree that it's too easy to access weapons. The process would be more involved. Perhaps formal training and psychological evaluations and the purchasers expense. It's hard to get a drivers license. Perhaps a gun purchasers license should be implemented. A by product would be the creation of industry and generate money to tax to go towards protecting our society. Cigarettes kill millions of people. No one is talking about banning them.
