Calling all volunteers!
On October 25, the second annual Philadelphia Inquirer Sudoku National Championship will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and we’re seeking volunteers to help as officials.

We need “spotters” to hand out and pick up papers. We need “judges” to help mark papers in the judging room. We need “activity coordinators” to staff the activity booths. And we need “administrators” to meet and greet contestants and handle behind-the-scenes matters.

Last year’s championship had 857 participants, setting the Guinness record for the most people ever playing sudoku simultaneously … anywhere in the world! This year we hope to set a new record. Contestants came from coast to coast, ranging in age from 6 to 87. It’s a great event that brings everyone together for the common love of the game.

As the host of the event, I can tell you that being an official is fun, exciting … and not too much work. It’s an enjoyable experience you should not soon forget.

The time commitment begins with volunteer training at 8:00 a.m. and ends when the championship concludes at 4:30 p.m. This includes a break for lunch. Times may vary slightly depending on the volunteer position. All positions include free continental breakfast, lunch, and an official championship t-shirt.

If you’d like to take part, please let us know by filling out this e-mail form. You can specify the kind of volunteer you’d like to be or let us assign you to where you’re most needed. Once you are assigned a position we will be in touch with details.

Sincerely,

Will Shortz

History suggests that this is going to come to an end soon. History also suggests it won't end the way Jeffrey Lurie envisioned when Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb became the Eagles' dynamic duo.
