Atlantic County doctor indicted on weapons charges

An Atlantic County grand jury has indicted a Mays Landing doctor on weapons charges stemming from a standoff with police earlier this summer, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

James Kauffman, 69,  was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and other counts in connection with a June 13 search of his medical office in Egg Harbor Township, and his homes in Philadelphia and South Jersey. Police said he brandished a 9mm Ruger pistol when investigators went to his office to execute a search warrant. He surrendered to authorities after talking with a hostage negotiator. He has been held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility since.

Kauffman had been married to April Kauffman, a small-business owner and  local radio personality, who on May 12, 2012, was  found shot to death in the bedroom of the couple’s home in Linwood. The doctor has not been named as a suspect in the case, and authorities have said the June 13 warrants were unrelated to their probe into the homicide.

A call late Wednesday to Kauffman’s lawyer, Edwin J. Jacobs, was not immediately returned.
