Our movie critic's weekend selections

Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me A fearless but compassionate documentary portrait of the Broadway belter and cabaret icon - a crank, a terror, a delight. Stritch has been a fixture of the New York theater and music scenes forever, and now, in her late 80s, bravely lets a camera crew follow her around. No MPAA rating

Mr. Peabody & Sherman The rebooted '60s 'toon, originally part of the Rocky and Bullwinkle lineup, is a time travel movie, a father-and-son movie, a boy-meets-girl movie, a movie that doggedly celebrates the art of the pun. Follow the bowtied, brainiac beagle and his bespectacled boy as they ricochet through the centuries, exploring history firsthand, and firstpaw. PG

12 Years a Slave The Academy Award-winning best picture: a free black man is abducted and sold into slavery, toiling on plantations in the pre-Civil War South, faced with impossible hardship and cruelty. British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor gives body and soul in the lead, and Lupita Nyong'o (best supporting actress Oscar), Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, and Brad Pitt are part of a superb supporting cast.
