ESPY Award controversy

How far we've come, how far we have to go. At Wednesday night's ESPY Awards, Abby Wambach of the world champion U.S. women's soccer team (her post-win TV kiss with wife Sarah Huffman went viral) presented the Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Caitlin Jenner, the former Bruce Jenner who won the 1972 Olympic gold medal in the men's decathlon. Caitlin's eloquent speech called for respect for transsexual people and all people: "And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society, and a better world for all of us." Caitlin was the social-media hit of the night. But not everyone loved it. Bob Costas called it "a crass exploitation play." Film director Peter Berg was angry Jenner was honored over double-amputee war veteran Gregory D. Gadson. Philly sports-talk guy Howard Eskin first tweeted, "Bruce Jenner was selected 2 win Award because ESPY's switched 2 ABC and needed the ratings for the freak show. Embarrassed name of Arthur Ashe." Then, oops, he deleted that, and reposted it - without the word freak.

Always in love with Amy

Go to your local magazine rack and laugh with Amy Schumer. Woman's on more covers than Con Ed. She graces(?) the GQ comedy issue in a Princess Leia space-kini next to (depending on which alt-cover you get) either C3PO or Chewie. The headline on the latter: "Amy Schumer: How to Make Her Yell Like Chewbacca." She's also on Glamour: "I want to make women laugh. I want them to use their voice. And I want a jet." Like cream cheese, she's on a roll.
