Sideshow: Curt Schilling throws a curveball to protect daughter

Schilling vs. the Trolls

Former Phillies pitcher Curt Schilling, furious, took up arms against two men he said were marauding his daughter Gabby via Twitter. On Feb. 25, he'd congratulated Gabby for getting to pitch for the Salve Regina University Seahawks softball team in Newport, R.I. The social-media reaction, mostly happy, included some gross and indecent messages. Schilling outed the messagers as one Adam Nagel of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., and another man later identified as Sean MacDonald. Schilling posted their info just below screen shots of bad messages. Repercussions ensued. Both Twitter accounts have been deleted. Brookdale says it has suspended Nagel. And the New York Yankees, for whom MacDonald was working, say he's fired.

Oprah moves Harpo

On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey confirmed to the Chicago staff of her Harpo Studios that it's all moving to West Hollywood. Harpo will close its Chicago doors by the end of the year. The Chicago lease isn't up until April 2016, but, said Oprah, it's time to stop the back-and-forth of the last five years and just go. So end 26 years of Windy City success. She told Hollywood Reporter that "I've spent more hours in this building than I have any other building on Earth. . . . We were here when there was nothing but . . . rats on the street, and now it's one of the hottest neighborhoods" in town. With sadness, she said, "The time had come to downsize this part of the business and to move forward."

NBC musical chairs

When Brian Williams was suspended by NBC for misrepresentin', Sideshow favorite Lester Holt stepped up to anchor the NBC Nightly News. He's done fine, with ratings up 7 percent. Now, he has stepped away temporarily for a family emergency. Who you gonna call? Savannah Guthrie, host of Today (with which she just re-signed)! She says she's gonna do both shows while Holt is gone. She's gonna be very tired. Ironic: Rumors had her replacing Williams and Hoda Kotb (now host of the fourth hour of Today with Kathie Lee Gifford) replacing Guthrie at Today, where ratings have slumbered.

Kanye talks to Oxford

"OK, everyone please be completely quiet, because I can literally hear a whisper, and it'll throw off my stream of consciousness, and when I get my stream of consciousness going, that's when I give the best, illest quotes." That's Kanye West talking. On Tuesday, he gave a guest lecture at Oxford University. Yeah, the one in England. (There's a mall in Oxford, Pa., yo.) Kanye basically riffed on anything that got into his head, including his own massive ego ("One of my biggest Achilles' heels has been my ego. And if I, Kanye West, the very person, can remove my ego, I think there's hope for everyone."), knowing folks in high places ("Call Elon Musk out of the blue, or call Obama out of the blue . . . he calls the home phone, by the way"), and so on. Truth is weirder, way weirder, than you could ever make up.
