There was an outpouring of grief Friday from friends of actress Bonnie Franklin, 69, who died earlier in the day of pancreatic cancer.
"My heart is breaking," Franklin's One Day at a Time costar Valerie Bertinelli told People. "Bonnie has always been one of the most important women in my life and was a second mother to me." Bertinelli added that "she taught me to navigate . . . [life] with grace and humor."
Sally Jessy Raphael tweeted, "The world has lost a gifted actress, and more importantly, a wonderful lady."
Iraq War vet wins literary prize
Richmond, Va.-born poet Kevin Powers, 32, who enlisted in the Army at age 17 and served a one-year tour in Iraq with a bomb disposal unit and as a machine gunner in 2004, has won this year's prestigious Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for a distinguished first book of fiction for his critically acclaimed Iraq War novel The Yellow Birds.
Colm Tóibín, who will be the keynote speaker at the March 24 award ceremony, said of Powers' work, "Every moment, every memory, every object, every move, are conjured up with a fierce and exact concentration and sense of truth."
This year's two other finalists were Jennifer duBois for A Partial History of Lost Causes and Vaddey Ratner for In the Shadow of the Banyan.
