Flyers-Sharks preview: Can Philly rebound from disastrous finish in Pittsburgh?

KEY PLAYERS: San Jose has a score to settle, and it is playing the reeling Flyers at a good time. The Flyers are coming off a devastating defeat in which they blew yet another two-goal, third-period lead and lost for the eighth straight time. And the Sharks are well-rested while the Flyers are playing on consecutive nights.

The Sharks dropped a season-opening, 5-3 decision to the visiting Flyers on Oct. 4. In that game, Wayne Simmonds had a hat trick, and the Flyers power play was 3 for 5.

San Jose, which has an impressive 5-2-1 road record, is led by Logan Couture (13 goals, 19 points), Tomas Hertl (14 points), and Joe Thornton (14 points). The Sharks also have been getting terrific goaltending from Martin Jones (2.05 GAA, .930 save percentage) and Aaron Dell (2.23 GAA, .920). Their "D" includes Brent Burns (10 points), Marc-Edouard Vlasic (plus-8), and Justin Braun (plus-8).

The Flyers are coming off a crushing 5-4 overtime loss Monday in Pittsburgh. They blew a two-goal lead for the fourth time in the last six games. They took a 4-3 lead on Michael Raffl's goal with a little less than four minutes left in regulation but couldn't close the deal.

The Flyers have gotten most of their production from the top line of Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier and Jake Voracek, but that unit was a combined minus-8 against the Pens and was badly outplayed by Sidney Crosby and Co.

Goalie Michal Neuvirth is expected to get the start for the Flyers, who have lost seven of their last eight at the Wells Fargo Center.

THINGS TO KNOW: It will be Hockey Fights Cancer Night at the Wells Fargo Center. The ceremonial puck drop will be made by Madeline Swenson, a Warminster resident who is battling leukemia. She is celebrating her 10th birthday Tuesday. … Giroux collected his 601st and 602nd career points Monday and moved into ninth place on the Flyers' all-time scoring list, passing Rod Brind 'Amour. … San Jose is coming off Saturday's 5-0 win over Winnipeg. … The Sharks' PK is second in the NHL, clicking at 88 percent. … When their opponent scores first, the Flyers have won just one of 12 games (1-7-4).

HEAD TO HEAD: This will be the second and final meeting this season between the teams. The Flyers have a 16-15-4-5 advantage in the all-time series. They have not swept a series (minimum of two games) from San Jose since 1999-2000.
