Flyers end preseason with 5-2 loss to Islanders

The Flyers' dress rehearsal for the start of the season was a dud.

Anders Lee and Anthony Beauvillier scored 45 seconds apart early in the second period Sunday night, sparking the New York Islanders past the Flyers, 5-2, in a penalty-filled game at the Wells Fargo Center.

It was the final exhibition game for the Flyers, who finished the preseason with a 3-2-3 record. They open the season Wednesday in San Jose, starting a four-game road trip.

The Islanders played without superstar John Tavares, who was rested.

The Flyers used most of the players that will be in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds scored for the Flyers.

Raffl finished a two-on-one by converting a Scott Laughton pass to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead 2:21 into the game into the game. Taylor Leier, who was robbed of a goal late in the first period, added another assist on Raffl's tally.

The fourth line — Laughton centering Leier and Raffl — was the Flyers' best unit for most of the night.

After former Flyer Dennis Seidenberg tied the game at 1-all by putting a long slap shot past Brian Elliott with 6:50 left in the first, the Isles struck twice in the first 3:07 of the second period.

Anders Lee scored on a power-play rebound to make it 2-1, and Beauvillier beat a slow-to-react Elliott with a left-circle shot to the short side, padding the lead to 3-1.

Beauvillier made it 4-1 just 32 seconds into the third period, scoring on a right-circle blast while the Islanders were on a four-on-three power play. Simmonds countered with a power-play goal of his own, tipping in Shayne Gostisbehere's drive to slice the deficit to 4-2 with 13:28 to play.

Rookies Oskar Lindblom, Sam Morin and Travis Sanheim were among the Flyers' scratches. Sanheim had three goals in the preseason _ he shared the team lead with Travis Konecny _ but was in danger of being sent to the AHL's Phantoms.

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said he would announce the team's two roster trims shortly after the game.

Breakaways. The Flyers went 1 for 6 on the power play…Val Filppula was on the first power-play unit, filling the spot held last season by Brayden Schenn (17 power-play goals), who was dealt to St. Louis….Konecny led the Flyers with six preseason points.
