It's Week 8 of the football season and - no surprise - a number of contests have league-title implications. At or near the top of the list is Friday night's Central League showdown between Garnet Valley, ranked 14th in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, and No. 24 Springfield (Delco).
La Salle vs. Archbishop Wood isn't the only Friday night game between top-10 teams. In the continuation of their heated Ches-Mont League National Conference rivalry, No. 5 Coatesville will play No. 8 Downingtown East at 7 p.m. at Downingtown West's Kottmeyer Stadium.
Alec Vera is especially happy about the decision he made two years ago to give football a second shot. That's because the senior quarterback and Quakertown are 4-0, playing on a sparkling new turf field, and contending for the Suburban One League Continental Conference title.
Ryan Hubley spent much of the weekend receiving congratulatory texts, phone calls, and Twitter and Facebook messages. All the attention was deserved, as the senior wide receiver from Oxford set a new single-game state record while making seven touchdown catches in a thrilling, 53-47 triumph over host Kennett in a Ches-Mont League American Conference opener Friday night.
Rick O'Brien has been writing for the Inquirer since 1993, primarily covering high school sports in Southeastern Pennsylvania. He focuses on football and boys' basketball and baseball, with other events (Penn Relays, regattas on the Schuylkill, etc.) and some pro sports mixed in.
