Paul Domowitch's Eagles Report Card

RUSHING OFFENSE

The Eagles had hoped to lean on the run game to take the pressure off rookie RT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, but ran a season-low 48 plays, just 21 of them runs. Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles combined for 80 yards on 13 carries.

GRADE: B-minus

PASSING OFFENSE

Halapoulivaati Vaitai struggled mightily in his first start and his problems seemed to have a trickle-down effect on the rest of the o-line. Carson Wentz was sacked five times, completed just 11 of 22 passes and didn't throw a TD pass for the first time.

GRADE: D

RUN DEFENSE

Remember the Carolina, Tampa Bay and Arizona games last year when the Eagles couldn't stop the run? This was like that. The Redskins, who had been averaging just 86.4 rushing yards per game, rolled up 230 on 33 carries.

GRADE: F

PASS DEFENSE

The Eagles' pass rush, which registered 14 sacks in the first four games, never got close to Kirk Cousins, except when Fletcher Cox was picking up another penalty. Without injured cornerback Leodis McKelvin and without pressure up front, the Eagles struggled to cover the Redskins' arsenal of skill-position weapons. Four different receivers had 50-plus receiving yards. And their best offensive player, tight end Jordan Reed, didn't play.

GRADE: D-minus

SPECIAL TEAMS

Rookie KR Wendell Smallwood had an 86-yard, second-quarter return for a touchdown and PR Darren Sproles averaged 10.3 yards per return. Caleb Sturgis made a pair of gimme field goals, and the Eagles' coverage units neutralized the Redskins' return men. Donnie Jones put three of his six punts inside the 20.

GRADE: A

OVERALL

Doug Pederson says he's "fully committed" to Halapoulivaati Vaitai at right tackle. We'll see. On Sunday, he looked like a guy in way over his head. More disconcerting than his poor play, though, was the play of Jim Schwartz's defense, which gave up 493 yards and 26 first downs. The fact that the Eagles still only lost by seven is more a reflection on the Redskins than the Eagles.
