John Baer: Corbett a shoo-in to win the unpopular vote

AND NOW for the budget address Gov. Corbett WON'T give Tuesday to a joint session of the Legislature:

Speaker Smith, President Pro Tempore Scarnati, Lt. Gov. Cawley, members of the General Assembly, distinguished Cabinet, fellow citizens.

These past two years, I've sought to govern mindful of the words of our founder William Penn, who once said, "Avoid popularity; it has many snares and no real benefit."

I believe I have been successful.

My approval rating is in the tank, especially with women. And less than a majority of Republicans think I deserve a second term.

Our founder would be pleased.

With you, too; the only thing more unpopular than me is you.

So there's much to do.

As you know, I won this office by putting your leaders in prison and by promising jobs, transparency in government, less spending and no new taxes.

Let's look where we are today.

We've created jobs.

For lawyers defending lawmakers charged with corruption.

For lawyers continuing to litigate our nonpartisan, nothing-to-do-with-keeping-the-Philly-vote-down voter-ID law.

For lawyers working my suit against the NCAA, which has nothing to do with me trying to get back in the graces of members of Nittany Nation who think I mucked up that child-sex thing.

For lawyers involved in our lottery-privatization contract with the Brits, which may or may not be legal depending on our Democrat attorney general and which may or may not be paid for depending on our Democrat state treasurer.

(Feel free, by the way, to scrutinize their budgets.)

For lawyers fighting the rejection of multiple right-to-know requests made by nosy journalists and citizens; and for lawyers to work upcoming lawsuits over cutting public pensions or tossing liquor-store workers out into our streets.

We're spending less.

By not fixing roads and bridges, but then driving is better in winter since the potholes fill with snow.

And we are not raising taxes.

Yes, local school districts or municipalities might be. But that's only because they're not doing more with the less we're giving them.

And even if the folks who sell gasoline decide to ding consumers with my increase in the wholesale-gas tax, remember that is not a tax from me. It's a tax from folks who sell gasoline.

So. Moving on.

Two years ago I said let's build a new Pennsylvania.

One way to do that is to get rid of silly laws governing the old Pennsylvania.

For example: In the old Pennsylvania, you couldn't discharge a gun, cannon or any explosive weapon at a wedding. True story.

Now, thanks to my extending the Castle Doctrine, you can discharge weapons anywhere any time you feel threatened. Like maybe at a wedding. Just sayin'.

There's also a law in the old Pennsylvania that all liquor stores must be run by the state. But now, since I plan to allow anyone with money to run a liquor store, that silly law will be gone.

And, ladies and gentlemen, combining more liquor stores with less restriction on discharging weapons will end all assertions that Pennsylvania's a boring place.

Things are happening here.

In my first budget address in 2011, I noted that Pennsylvania ranked as the 10th-worst state in terms of state and local taxes.

I can report that, according to the nonprofit, nonpartisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, we are today the eighth-worst state.

We're on the move. Let's move some more.

Let's get to work cutting spending on pensions (not yours, of course), on selling state stores, fixing bridges and expanding gaming.

These are stone-cold winners for Pennsylvania, my re-election chances and yours.

So let's be willing to risk together the "many snares" that come with popularity.

Thank you. And GO PENN STATE!

When we go to the polls to oust Corbett, let's not forget all of his cohorts in our extremely bloated legislature; you remember them, those that want invasive medical procedures done to women, those who really want to limit our right to vote, those who took the state of PA and have done their best to make it a state belonging to the Republican party, and failing that, changing the way our electoral ballots are awarded regardless of the popular vote, those who want to deny our local zoning codes to make room for gas wells in our back yards, oh and last but certainly not least, those who want to make PA a right to work state thus casting light on the fact that they really don't care about our wages and benefits. Oh, yeah, let's not forget those sterling characters.

Lol...John, yours and Philly.com's war on Corbett is hilarious. All he has done is:

    1) Balance the state budget without having to raise taxes on the middle class or poor

    2) Repaid the $800MM Rainy Day Fund after Rendell drained it dry

    3) Brought thousands of new jobs to PA and hundreds of millions of dollars in new capital investments to the state thanks to the Marchellus Shale

    4) Prevented the state from seeking possible bankruptcy protection from the fiscal mess Rendell (and Obama) left behind.

Cobett's critics are just p*ssed off they aren't getting a free ride anymore (especially our myopic socialist friends in Philly). They have not real facts or issues of dispute.

The Lefts attack on Corbett is so transparent that I am surprised the Democrats don't nominate a minority just to get the Philly and Pittsburgh votes, lol!

    The Daily Corbett.

Working to Re-Elect Corbett Kommittee (WRECK) - clearly feed or produce something daily. Only surpassed by Nixon's CREEP.
Unfortunately, for them, this is wrong kinda press. Two times in a week- son-in-law, now this.

Let's not forget his is the government that has gerrymandered a Republican majority, attempted to take away people's right to vote and voted for invasive procedures on women. Corbett shouldn't even run again his chances of winning or so low.

Lets not forget how much personal wealth this crook has amassed during the last two years from all of his corperate overlords. The carnival/lottery deal probably stands to make him a pretty penny. You know he's making a fortune off of big oil, and private education firms. I hope this state can survive two more years of this crook.

What should he do Mr Baer, increase taxes by 40% in 8 years like Gov Spendell? I do not like some of Corbett's moves, but much of the hatres comes from public sector unions. As far as the women you mention, they are often upset by what is happening in the schools, but they do not understand that it is pensions that are taking all responsible for the increased costs. Pensions paying 87% of salary after 35 years on the job. Pensions, in eastern PA, in the $60,000 to $90,000 range for life. I will judge Corbett on whther or not he really stands up to the union bullies. Until the, he has not met my standards for a good governor. Taking on the weak, and taking on issues like liquor stores, is not a great thing. Let's see if, like Christie, he has the guts to take on the schoolyard bullies

How come Corbett looks like Dennis the Menace and is a menace to our state?

How come the right can't see past their nose when it comes to Corbett or any other right wing hack?

Corbett the Incompetent needs to move on so Pennsylvanians can elect a Governor with a clue.

So far, Corbett has kept his promise not to raise my taxes, so he has my vote. I also like his other initiatives, the real ones not the slanted, childish nonsense published here. This wouldn't be Philly.com if a fair, honest portrayal of a conservative appeared, so carry on.

"This wouldn't be Philly.com if a fair, honest portrayal of a conservative appeared, so carry on."

And yet you read this site and comment every day. Why not read a site which gives you an "honest portrayal" of a conservative and stop whining?
