Burger King has table service…and it's kinda charming, in a Philly sort of way

A Center City Burger King has introduced table service, complete with tablecloths and a host. It's kinda fun, and funny.

Here's a whopper of a news flash on the Philly food front. The Burger King at the corner of 8th and Market in Philadelphia has table service on the second floor.

And because I'm fancy like that, I thought I'd check it out with my colleague Jonathan Lai, 'cause he's fancy like that, too.

It's everything and nothing like you'd expect.

First, a little background. Apparently, a manager at the Philly BK saw that New York City offered the service, so she wanted to try it here. (Later, I found out that BK actually tried it out years ago and it didn't go well, but let's not let that failure affect our can-do attitude.)

The location, conveniently located a stone's throw away from hungry and broke journalists, is the only one in Philly with the service, I was told.

There are tablecloths and laminated menus and table numbers and actual salt and pepper shakers. And the most adorable and earnest host.

Oh, and a nice view. Of 8th and Market, but still…

The food is the same, and I was more than a little disappointed that my fries weren't hot, but it's kinda fun, in a little-kid-playing-dress-up kind of way.

There are definitely some simple ways they could fancy it up even more — put the condiments in little serving bowls, the burger and fries on plates. Maybe some silverware?

And if I'm gonna dream big, I'd say a simple wine and beer list would complement the classics. C'mon, you know you could get behind a bacon & cheese Whopper and a cold Yuengling. Or some Chicken Fries and I don't know, an approachable Chardonnay or something. I'm just spitballin' now, but you're ready to have it your way, aren't you?

Anyway, even without that upgrade, you could tell people were already kinda diggin' the new set-up. Upstairs, food was ordered in complete sentences, as in "the #5 or whatever" suddenly turned into "I'll have the Whopper with cheese. Please and thank you." Napkins were used, manners were minded.

Another diner commented that the floors were sticky, but even he tried to find the positive in that: "Maybe they just don't want me to leave."
