Gambling is taking her down

Creditors are threatening to go after her house.

DEAR HARRY: I'm writing this because I've caused myself a huge problem. I lost my husband in 2012 and went into a deep depression.

It all started when I lost my job in 2008, and I became supported totally by my husband. When he died, I got satisfaction only at the casinos - even when I lost. I owe Uncle Sam for the balance due for last year. I owe this year's real-estate taxes. I've drained all my bank accounts, including what I had in an IRA. Creditors are threatening to go after my house, which has no mortgage and is worth about $150,000.

I am seeing a psychiatrist to help me get back on my feet, but I keep going to the casinos because I can't relate to him. I'm going down fast, and I'm ashamed. Can you help?

WHAT HARRY SAYS: Let me try. First, have your psychiatrist recommend a colleague to whom you can relate. Have some family member or friend help you to join Gamblers Anonymous and help you get away from your gambling. Perhaps your family can engage you in other activities that will keep you out of those casinos. Get a job, even a part-time one, to get your mind off yourself. See if your clergyman can get you into activities in which other people are involved. Contact your state representative to see if state programs are available in your area. You are on the floor, and the only way to go is up. Good luck!
