What you should know about Sunday's Emmys

Try not to get too upset if one of your favorites gets snubbed at the Emmys this weekend. I'm more in sympathy than usual with Television Academy voters, who had some tough choices.

Try not to get too upset if one of your favorites gets snubbed at the Emmys this weekend.

I'm more in sympathy than usual with Television Academy voters, who had some tough choices.

This year, it truly is an honor just to be nominated, even for that HBO Emmy magnet, Game of Thrones, up for outstanding drama with FX's The Americans, Netflix's House of Cards, PBS's Downton Abbey, AMC's Better Call Saul, USA's Mr. Robot, and Showtime's Homeland.

That doesn't mean I'm not hoping to see some Emmy love for The Americans, which could use some more viewers who aren't also TV critics, or that I wouldn't cheer if Sterling K. Brown, who was a standout as Christopher Darden in FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story - and who, starting Tuesday, co-stars in NBC's This Is Us - got the win for supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie.

Here's what you should know about the 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which Jimmy Kimmel will host beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC:

You can make a weekend of it. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards already took place, but they'll be shown at 8 p.m. Saturday on FXX.

If you care more about the red carpet than anything, E! Entertainment's preshow coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. ABC will air arrivals from 7 to 8.

There's local rooting interest beyond Upper Darby's Tina Fey (whose Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is again up for outstanding comedy). Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail is a graduate of Washington Township High School in Sewell, Gloucester County.

You may get to see the real Marcia Clark side by side with Sarah Paulson, who played her in The People v. O.J. Simpson. When I asked Paulson last month whether she might be bringing Clark, I couldn't get more than a smiling, "Maybe," but since then, Clark has told Access Hollywood she'll be there.
