Call the Midwife.

Season 5 premiere brings the nuns and nurses of Nonnatus House to 1961, a year in which we can expect the birth in Poplar of a child with severe deformities to become part of a larger story. 8 p.m. Sunday on WHYY12.

American Idol. The singing contest that was once such a ratings juggernaut that other networks referred to it as the "Death Star" ends its 15-season run with a Tuesday-night retrospective, followed by a two-night finale. 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday on Fox.

The Americans. No episode of the 1980s spy drama so far this season has left more people more gutted than this one. And that's all I'm saying about that. 10 p.m. Wednesday on FX.

Catastrophe. At last, we get more of one of last year's best romcoms. The British series, which makes its U.S. Season 2 premiere on Amazon's subscription service, stars Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan as accidental parents trying to make a go of it as a family. Friday on Amazon.
