Give your winter feet a summer treat

Consider platform sandals your go-to cold-weather shoe this winter - especially if they are covered in velvet.

The trendlet

It's odd, we know, but it seems that all open-toed footwear - everything from flip-flops to gladiators - are getting winter makeovers. The chunky-heeled shoes will give us a stylish lift as we pair them with everything from sheaths to shorts (which will make cold-weather appearances of their own this year).

Where do they come from?

Sandals were a hot-weather-only shoe until English designer Phoebe Philo introduced the open-toed bootie in 2010 during the Paris debut of Céline.

In the next few years, countless open and peep-toed options followed, including Givenchy's bootlike gladiator sandals and the countless knockoffs from Nine West and even Payless.

Wider-heeled platform sandals have been a big deal these last two fashion cycles because of our affinity for '70s-inspired pieces: wrap dresses, trench coats, and bell bottoms. That, coupled with designer labels like Prada and Kenneth Cole experimenting with the different fabrications, make the possibilities now endless.

Who is wearing them?

Actresses Emma Roberts and Lauren Conrad love the eclectic footwear - as seen on several Pinterest posts. Heidi Klum was recently spotted at a Los Angeles airport in a sweet pair of orange suede Saint Laurent platform sandals.

Would Elizabeth wear them?

No question. And I'd be teeter-tottering with the best of them.

Should you wear them?

Sure. Just choose a shoe height that's comfortable. If you don't wear three-inch platforms on the regular in the summer, please don't try them on icy ground. Also, remember: Contrasting hosiery - think red tights with a navy-blue chunky shoe - can make your look.
