The jury in the Roger Clemens' perjury trial did not sit on Tuesday, but Judge Reggie Walton and the lawyers for both sides conferred on Walton's unusual practice of allowing jurors to put questions directly to government witness Brian McNamee.

The jury submitted the extremely high number of 29 questions and Walton decided which could be asked.

One went to the heart of the government's case that Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 when he said he never used steroids or Human Growth Hormone. McNamee has testified he supplied Clemens and other players with both substances.

A juror wanted to ask McNamee "why should we believe you?"

Walton refused to submit the question, saying that was for the jury to decide among themselves.

Schilling seeks funds

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said former Red Sox and Phillies star Curt Schilling has laid off an unspecified number of the approximately 300 employees at his troubled video gaming company.

Schilling, the 38 Studios founder, met with Chafee and the state's economic development agency on Monday night. Chafee said last week the company had asked the board for assistance to help stay afloat. The board took no action Monday.

38 Studios moved to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 after the state offered a $75 million loan guarantee.

Around the bigs

Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman was arrested in Grove City, Ohio, for driving on a suspended license early Monday.

The Minnesota Twins, who have used eight different starters already this season are about to use a ninth. Righthander Jason Marquis was removed from the roster on Tuesday, and GM Terry Ryan said he is trying to trade the pitcher.

The White Sox agreed to a contract with veteran infielder Orlando Hudson and put third baseman Brent Morel on the 15-day DL (lower back strain).

The Tigers placed infielder Ryan Raburn on the bereavement list. No details were discloses.

Caleb Lloyd, the 20-year-old college student who reaped national attention for catching two home run balls on Monday night, was made an honorary captain of the Cincinnati Reds and took out the lineup card for Tuesday night's game.
