Miami's Josh Johnson continued his impressive spring on Saturday, striking out three in 2 1/3 scoreless innings as the Marlins beat the world champion Cardinals, 3-1, in Jupiter, Fla.

The righthander was limited to nine starts last year because of shoulder problems, but he'll be Miami's opening day starter in April as the Marlins hope to ride a new ballpark into contention in the NL East.

Lewis tough

Colby Lewis pitched four perfect innings for AL champion Texas in a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox in Glendale, Ariz. He fanned Paul Konerko, Adam Dunn, and A.J. Pierzynski in the second inning.

Midseason form

AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander scattered three hits over four innings as Detroit and Washington tied, 5-5, in 10 innings in Lakeland, Fla.

Sharp debut

Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes homered, walked, and singled in his first major- league game, leading Oakland to a 6-3 win over Cincinnati in Phoenix.

Manny Ramirez went 0 for 3 and now is 0 for 8 this spring as he tries to make the A's as a nonroster player.

Wright still out

Third baseman David Wright is expected to miss at least another week because of soreness in his left rib cage, Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday.

Wright has not played in a game this spring.
