All it took was one little punch.
Carolina's Ben Hartsock has been telling friends that Jeremy Shockey - usually known only as a loud-mouthed flake - helped save Hartsock's life on Monday.
Hartsock, a fellow tight end, could not breathe in the team's lunch room after a piece of pork tenderloin lodged in his throat, the National Football Post reported.
Hartsock tried drinking some water to clear his throat and when that didn't work it became evident to others in the room that he could not breathe.
"He started to go to the bathroom and I don't know if he collapsed, but he couldn't breathe," agent Mike McCartney said. "Some new guy came and tried to give him the Heimlich. It didn't work.
"Then, Shockey punched him in the back pretty hard and out came the meat. The Panthers told me it was really scary.
Ronde Barber has made 183 straight starts, the most ever for a cornerback.
"He's our Cal Ripken," Tampa Bay GM Mike Dominik told SI.com.
The approach of Hurricane Irene caused the annual Jets-Giants game to be moved from Saturday afternoon to Monday night, creating logistical problems for both teams.
Both are scheduled to play their preseason finales on Thursday - the Jets at home against the Eagles and the Giants at New England. That gives them only two days, and possibly only one practice, between games. Also, the first roster cuts must be made on Tuesday, when teams are required to reduce their rosters from 80 to 70.
The game was enlivened by a couple of swings Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and Jets rookie defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson took at each other. Both were ejected.
Former Conestoga High linebacker Mark Herzlich, was on the Giants' roster for the Monday night game.
On Monday, less than two hours after being activated from the physically unable to perform list, Colts QB Peyton Manning told reporters it was the next step in his recovery from neck surgery in May. He declined to say what must be resolved before the Sept. 11 season-opener at Houston.
Tennessee placed star running back Chris Johnson on the reserve/did not report list, an administrative move that has no impact on contract talks. Johnson, who met with the Titans last week, is a holdout.
Dallas center Andre Gurode said he has been released by the Cowboys. Gurode, 33, made the Pro Bowl the last five years, but had surgery on his right knee in June and missed the first two weeks of camp.
The San Francisco 49ers notified the NFL that wide receiver Michael Crabtree caught a couple dozen passes during warmups while still on the physically unable to perform list. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league was investigating the situation.
Former Eagle QB Kevin Kolb, on being benched by coach Andy Reid after one 2010 start:
"Of course I was shocked," Kolb told SI.com. "Who wouldn't be? But the day it happened, I was in Andy' office for three hours. We talked about everything. And after I settled down, I tried to look at it from Andy's point of view. When your dad is a coach, you understand coaches a little better. It didn't mean I liked it, but I understood why he did it."
