A tale of gangsters and hazing and Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY — James Rahn swings the Honda Accord to the side of North Maine Avenue so he can sniff the ocean air."It’s nice, right?" he says, a gravel-voiced question, technically, but not one that awaits an answer. His stories are big on smell. His book Bloodnight, a collection of semifictionalized memories of growing up tough in this forlorn city, begins with a fifth-grade trauma.

We had a Purge Party at the paper Monday. Think free pizza, not Joseph Stalin. Management is encouraging us to cull our belongings so we have hopes of squeezing into the ladies garment department at Strawbridge’s. In preparation for next month’s move, reporters — notorious hoarders all — have been tossing treasured 1997 city budgets, primitive modems, maps from when the Iron Curtain still stood.

The river drives' popularity crowding out some fans

Looks to be a busy summer along the Schuylkill, where stalwarts can work up a sweat for such causes as the Strides for Stroke 5K Run/Walk, the Run For Your Life, and the Undy 5000, which sounds racier than it is — a fund-raiser to fight colon cancer. For each activity — 16 are planned for Saturday and Sundays between now and the end of September — the city hands over Martin Luther King Drive, which it already closes to cars on weekends.

WWII soldier's family fights for his honor

The souvenirs Tony DiNardo saved from the war were parceled into five lockboxes he stashed around his South Philadelphia rowhouse. This week, when those chests were pried open, DiNardo’s family learned a little more about a life he’d only hinted at. He kept a copy of the Evening Bulletin from Dec. 8, 1941, with its banner headline, “Bombers Attack Hawaii Twice,” and its bookend, the victory edition from nearly four years later that trumpeted, “The War Is Over.”

Five years ago, as soon as her breast-cancer treatment ended, Mindy Cohen put on the pink.
She e-mailed everyone she knew, asking whether they'd walk in her name at the annual Race for the Cure. By that first race day, Team Mindy was already a juggernaut.

Another year, another 85 columns, which raises the question: Where are they now?
Keith Fenimore's efforts to own the world's most recognizable face have not netted success, if you measure his mug against that of, say Muhammad Ali or Angelina Jolie. Or even James Fenimore Cooper.
