6 standout Philly music festivals for summer

Firefly (June 16-19, the Woodlands of Dover). Firefly continues to thrive, with expected attendance of 80,000 per day, despite this year's mostly predictable, if perfectly respectable, lineup: Major Lazer; Kings of Leon; Ellie Goulding; Deadmau5; Florence & the Machine; Vince Staples; Earth, Wind & Fire; Fetty Wap; Of Monsters & Men; Mumford & Sons; and scores more. XPoNential Music Festival (July 22-24, Camden Waterfront)
The WXPN-FM (88.5)-presented, weekend-long fest in Camden is really two festivals in one. During the day at Wiggins Park, it's an outdoor gathering on two riverside stages, featuring Father John Misty, Shawn Colvin & Steve Earle, Femi Kuti, Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band, and local standouts Low Cut Connie, Eliza Hardy Jones, and Queen of Jeans. Then it moves next door into the BB&T Pavilion, where Ryan Adams, Alabama Shakes, and Brandi Carlile will headline on successive nights. (xpnfest.org)

Mad Decent Block Party (Aug. 13, Festival Pier at Penn's Landing)
The hyperenergetic DJ culture and EDM event of the summer, hosted by former Philadelphian and hitmaking producer to the stars Diplo and his now L.A.-based Mad Decent label. (800-745-3000, maddecentblockparty.com)

Philadelphia Folk Festival (Aug. 18-21, Old Poole Farm, Schwenksville)
The 55th annual Folk Fest's highlights include the great Chicano rockers Los Lobos, zydeco squeezer Buckwheat Zydeco, harmonizing up-and-comers Darlingside, country standard-bearer Marty Stuart, local songwriter Liz Longley, and bluegrass tandem Del McCoury and David Grisman. Made in America (Sept. 3-4, Ben Franklin Parkway)
Who's playing Jay Z's and Budweiser's two-day Labor Day festival? We don't know yet. Odds are, it won't be Beyoncé. In what will be its fifth year, MIA is an established presence on the overstuffed calendar, and maybe the most hip-hop-friendly urban fest of its kind. (madeinamericafest.com)

Analog-A-Go-Go (Sept. 17, Bellevue State Park, near Wilmington)
Dogfish Head beer has put on a pint-size summer music festival in Rehoboth Beach for the last five years. This year, it moves to Bellevue State Park. There's a full day of cool bands, including indie stalwarts Built to Spill, conscious rapper Talib Kweli, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and Philadelphia rockers Beach Slang.
