Brady: Shooter targeting Republicans, security upped for lawmakers

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady (D., Pa.) says Capitol Police told him that the gunman who wounded Rep. Steve Scalise (R., La.) in a shooting at a baseball field where lawmakers and others were practicing was targeting Republicans.

Security has been increased for lawmakers in the aftermath of the Wednesday morning shooting in Alexandria, Va., according to Brady, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Administration, which oversees the Capitol Police.

Brady said the Capitol Police told him the shooter knew he was targeting Republicans.

"About 100 shots were fired," Brady said. "Can you imagine?  Not all by the shooter. They figure 40 or 50 from him."

The rest were return fire from the security detail protecting Scalise, a top House Republican, Brady said.

Brady said Capitol Police also told him they were increasing security around members of Congress after the shooting in case the shootings were "an organized thing to get congressmen."

Brady, chairman of the Democratic City Committee, said Philadelphia police were sitting outside his home in Overbrook while he was in Washington, D.C.

"They don't know if this is an isolated incident or not," Brady said.

The Congressional Baseball Game for Charity was scheduled be played Thursday night at Nationals Park.

"We play it every year," said Brady, who is not on the Democratic team. "We practice every morning. The Democrats practice on one field. The Republicans practice on another."
