Ask Amy: Teacher's provocative Facebook pic

Dear Amy: My child goes to high school and has a teacher who is young and pretty.

The boys found her profile on Facebook, and her profile picture is a bit provocative. It's not terribly provocative - she is fully clothed - but the photo is definitely very sexy, which explains the boys' interest in it.

Should this be brought to the administration's attention - or am I being overly concerned?

I would think that if you know your students are going to seek you out on a public Web site, you would want to look a little more discreet.

Please let me know what you think.

- Concerned Mom

Dear Concerned: I agree that teachers should be discreet in their public profiles, but then I also think that CPAs, veterinarians, and Paris Hilton should be more discreet too.

Adults who teach young people have a responsibility to conduct themselves appropriately when they are in the school community.

This doesn't preclude them from being young and attractive, but teachers need to be aware that they are, for better or worse, being watched by their students.

This doesn't sound serious enough to warrant your marching in to the administration, but you could take it up with the teacher directly.

Just say, "You should know that the boys in school are very interested in your Facebook page. I'm wondering if you might want to rethink your profile photo."

According to you this photograph rests somewhere along the margins of appropriate. Give this young teacher an opportunity to reflect on her choices and make a change if she wants to.

the right thing to do is to post that pic here and let us all decide for ourselves, it's only fair.

its time for the schools to wise up.....you want PTA membership to skyrocket?? you want parental involvement? you want standing room only on parent/teacher night? hire a few hot 20-somethings and the dads will be drawing straws to see who gets to 'volunteer'....and the wives will also come because they will know something is odd when the hubbys want to shave/shower/cologne for a meeting about the hallway bulletin board.

Agreed, km-we cannot decide this without all of the facts in question. We need to at least see that pic

Pu-lease...even the writer says it was in good taste. Teachers are people too. These boys can find much more provacative images on the internet and, well, boys will be boys...just see above comments. Maybe mommy should be more concerned about what is being taught IN THE CLASSROOM. Teacher can't help being hot. Maybe it will make her little "boy" pay attention...I notice no objection to the quality of education her son is receiving. Hey ROASTBEEF - aren't you using the internet to post your comment? If internet/facebook use means you don't have a life, then you appear to be in that category with the rest of us, dummy.

OK, I guess she can't go to the beach, can't go out to a bar, may not have any family photos taken. Whats wrong with these people. Buy the kid a playboy magazine so he won't have to search facebook, by the way, on which they can also see provocative ads, to see pretty woman. What a prude!!!

The teacher ought to set her photos to friends only and restrict what non-friends can see. It's really easy in the security settings.

If the teacher hasn't made advances toward any of her students or vice versa. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, WHAT PEOPLE DO ON THEIR TIME, IS THEIR BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
