PUC gives UGI a $27M rate increase

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has approved a $27 million gas-rate increase for UGI Utilities Inc., less than half the utility's initial request.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has approved a $27 million gas-rate increase for UGI Utilities Inc., less than half the utility's initial request.

The company provides gas service to 388,000 customers in 15 of the state's eastern and south central counties.

The rate increase approved Thursday, the result of a settlement between the utility and PUC staff and consumer representatives, will boost a typical monthly bill for a residential customer from $51.77 to $56.11, or 8.4 percent, the PUC said. The increase goes into effect Oct. 19.

Base rates cover the cost of operating and maintaining the gas-distribution system and include the utility's profit. The fuel cost of the natural gas is separate, and varies quarterly depending on market conditions.
