Wainwright could miss the season

St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright could miss the rest of the season.

The 33-year-old righthander was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with an injured Achilles and left ankle that occurred when he was batting in Saturday night's game against the Brewers.

While it appears the Cardinals are preparing for Wainwright to be out much longer, manager Mike Matheny would not speculate on a time frame. Several published reports said the Cardinals expect Wainwright to be out for the season. Matheny would only say the pitcher will have an MRI Monday when the team returns to St. Louis.

Wainwright was hurt while stumbling out of the batter's box in the fifth inning in a 5-3 win. "I don't have any more information than I had for you yesterday," Matheny said before Sunday's game. "He'll fly back with us today. He'll get in the (MRI) tube tomorrow and we'll a find a little more definitive answer as to what's going on." Matheny said the Cardinals have not determined who would start in place of Wainwright on Thursday against the Phillies.

After Saturday's game, Wainwright was wearing a protective boot on his left ankle. He said it felt like something hit him in the back of the ankle.

"If you look at the replay, I kind of get out of the box and look back to think, gosh, the catcher's mask must have hit me or the bat must have hit me."

Broken bats costly

Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers had a frustrating night against Garrett Richards of the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Not only did Beltre go 0-for-3, he broke his bat each time.

Beltre had some fun with his adversity, though. He sent a $300 invoice to Richards to replace his broken lumber. Richards had a lighthearted response to Beltre's request. The pitcher sent a signed batting practice bat to Beltre with a note hoping that the bat satisfied his invoice.

Puig goes on DL

Yasiel Puig is on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his major-league career with a strained right hamstring. He went on the DL along with pitcher Joel Peralta (neck strain) before the Dodgers' series finale against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Celebration delayed

Rain washed out the Colorado Rockies' plans to celebrate the team's 20th anniversary of playing at Coors Field. The game against the Giants was postponed. The Rockies brought back members of the 1995 team, including Bill Swift and Larry Walker, to mark the occasion.

No makeup date has been set.
