The Minnesota Twins traded the first baseman and designated hitter to the Mariners on Thursday for minor-league pitcher Stephen Pryor. Morales hit 23 home runs and drove in 80 runs for the Mariners last season, but he turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer from Seattle to become a free agent.
Morales sat out the first two months of the season while searching for a new deal, signing a pro-rated $12 million contract with the Twins on June 8. He hit .234 with 11 doubles, one homer, and 18 RBIs in 39 games with the Twins.
Yankees get Capuano
New York acquired left-hander Chris Capuano from the Colorado Rockies for cash, the team announced.
Capuano, 35, started the season with Boston and went 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA in 28 relief appearances. The Red Sox released him July 1, and he signed with Colorado. He made four starts in triple A and double A for the Rockies.
Capuano has pitched with Arizona, Milwaukee, the Mets, the Dodgers, and Boston in 10 seasons. He was an NL all-star in 2006.
A's drop Johnson
The Oakland Athletics designated righthander Jim Johnson for assignment. Johnson, acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, was 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games with the A's.
Induction canceled
Chuck Knoblauch was charged with assaulting his ex-wife, prompting the Minnesota Twins to cancel his induction into the team's Hall of Fame on Aug. 23. Knoblauch was the 1991 American League rookie of the year with the Twins.
