Nissan Cube is the future of fun

Hip cars require a certain level of style and class that often rules out the chance for pragmatism.

But as styles have progressed and engineering has changed, utility and style have become synonymous.

Enter the Nissan Cube.

It is the Japanese auto maker's first foray into the new boxy but fun class of compact crossovers and wagons that are taking the U.S. by storm.

With all of the options available on the new Cube, choosing which one to drive home from Golden Isles Nissan in Brunswick will be the most difficult part of buying one.

On first glance, you might question whether it is real.

Its asymmetrical design looks more like a concept vehicle than a production car, and basically it is.

The rear window wraps around the passenger side of the car and connects seamlessly with the rear passenger window to create a futuristic look.

The rear hatch opens to the side, not overhead, like most hatchbacks.

Also unlike most hatchbacks is the Cube's shape. It is, well, a cube. It is intended to maximize interior space and make the small car feel big, which it achieves with ease.

Its interior looks like something out of a futuristic movie, with a two-toned dash that curves across the front of the car creating a pleasing look.

There is room for four full sized adults with a nice sized cargo behind the back seat.

There are plenty of stereo options including one with six speakers and an 8-inch Rockford Fosgate subwoofer and amp which is sure to meet anyone's hip standards.

Powering the Cube is a peppy and efficient 1.8 liter inline four cylinder that makes 122 horsepower and 127 pound feet of torque. With a curb weight of under 3,000 pounds, that is plenty to have a little fun while driving.

It is mated with a six-speed manual transmission in the standard and S trim levels, while an Xtronic CVT transmission comes standard on the SL and Krom trims.

All together the Cube is capable of over 30 mpg on the highway and is EPA rated at 28 in the city with the CVT transmission.

Considering the style, spunk and utility for a starting price of only $13,990, there are bound to be plenty of Cube's rolling around town.

Engine Specs: 1.8L I-4 with 122 hp and 127 lb. ft. of torque.

Cool Options: There are a plethora of factory options and accessories for the Cube that make each car unique.

Why Buy It: It is affordable, stylish and fun.

Prices: MSRP starting at $13,990; Well Equipped starting at $16,790
