Pickup truck tailgates are now joining hubcaps, audio systems and airbags as being among the most stolen vehicle components.

The Internet is abuzz with reports of widespread tailgate theft, particularly in southwestern states when pickup trucks rule the roads. According to the Detroit News, an adept thief can dislodge an unlocked one in seconds – and not much longer if the handle is locked – using their bare hands or, at most, a screwdriver. Replacement tailgates can cost as much as $1,200, and far more than that if they’ve been fitted with rearview backup cameras. Some “used” tailgates can be found selling for several hundred dollars less online or through unscrupulous auto parts stores, though some victims report buying back their original tailgates in the process.

Pickup owners are advised to purchase an aftermarket hinge lock, which sell at auto parts stores for around $20 or less, so the tailgate cannot be removed – or at least not easily – without the proper tools.
