    • Austrailian band 5 Seconds of Summer is formed in Sydney in 2011. The band consists of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin. Their claim to fame came when their cover of Chris Brown and Justin Bieber's "Next to You" received over 600,000 hits on YouTube.

    • Born Maya Arulpragasam in Sri Lanka, M.I.A. moved to London at 11, and over time she developed her musical tastes within rap, electronica, reggae, pop and hip-hop circles. She sent out shockwaves with her singles 'Galang' and 'Sunshowers' along with her mixtape collaboration with Diplo 'Piracy Funds Terrorism.' Her debut album 'Arular,' capitalized on her mongrel mix of hip-hop, ragga, dancehall, electro and pop alongside uncompromising, spitting lyrics. In 2007, she released her second album, Kala, which was honored as the year's best album by Rolling Stone, Blender, and others.

In 1992 the group's first single 'End of the Road' set a new record for longevity, staying at number 1 for 13 weeks, breaking Elvis Presley's record. In 2011 the group released a new album 'Twenty' which honored their 20 years in the music business.
