The Belmont Mansion Underground Railroad Museum presents an exhibition titled Free At Last: A History of the Abolition of Slavery. The UGRRM was chosen by the Gilda Lehrman Institute of American History to the be the first stop on its five city tour. Looking back from through history, the abolition of slavery in the United States from 1780 to 1865 is one of the nation's most extraordinary crusades.

Erika de Vries is primarily a photographer, but recently created this multi-media installation for the University museum. She was inspired by the recent conversion of her basement into a workspace and traditional work done by mothers in basements, like fabric dying an canning foods.

This exhibit features never before displayed objects from the private collections of Lenape people in Pennsylvania, in addition to historic and contemporary photographs, and archaeological objects from the collections of Penn Museum. Ancient masks, dolls, jewelry, and other traditional arts are featured, as well as a number of once-secret family heirlooms, rich with hidden Lenape symbolism, dating from the early 1800s.

When it was all ready one afternoon last week - the dry-brined turkey a rosy chestnut brown, the Sister Frances' Potatoes (named for one of the last of the famously celibate Shakers), the brothy, purposefully not creamy blue-pumpkin soup (with a sour jolt of preserved lemon), Melissa Hamilton beamed at what she had wrought.
