Last Call at the Downbeat
Written by Jazz Bridge co-founder Suzanne Cloud, 'Last Call at the Downbeat' is a fascinating look back at trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, one of the founders of modern jazz, and what history proved to be a ground-breaking engagement at a legendary Philadelphia nightspot, the Downbeat, long a landmark at 11th and Ludlow Street. Dizzy is depicted in this show as a trumpeter ready to invent something called be-bop just after being fired from the big band of Lucky Millinder after a gig at the Earle Theatre, just a block away from the Downbeat. Gillespie will have plenty of tales to tell about bop and Philadelphia jazz "back in the day," and part of this eclectic presentation will be a filmed interview with the only surviving member of this club date, 100-year-old drummer Charlie Rice.
