A section of the Vine Street Expressway (Interstate 676) will be closed overnight for three nights this week as crews work on demolishing the 18th Street Bridge.

Richard Montanez, deputy commissioner of the city's streets department, said PennDOT has had similar closures on I-676 about a dozen times in the last three years. He said the city doesn't anticipate a major impact on traffic.

"We've been able to mitigate it with the detour routes we have," Montanez said. "So if everything goes according to plan … the public should see only minor delays."

The roadway will be closed in both directions between the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) and Broad Street from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There will be several detours.

When I-676 East is closed, those traveling from I-76 will exit at 30th Street. Those traveling on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and intending to use the 24th Street on-ramp will instead stay on the Parkway around Logan Circle and follow Vine Street to the ramp on I-676.

When I-676 West is closed, those traveling to I-76 will exit at Broad Street.

The work is part of a $64.8 million project to rebuild spans of I-676 between 18th and 22nd Streets that are deteriorating. Five bridges over I-676 are under construction.
