Philadelphia and nearby communities will be a no-drone zone during DNC

The skies over Philadelphia and surrounding communities will be a "no-drone zone" during next week's Democratic National Convention. The Federal Aviation Administration said that from 2 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. next Friday, the airspace within a 30-nautical-mile radius of the Wells Fargo Center will be off-limits to drones and many other things that fly, including radio-controlled model aircraft, gliders, seaplanes, parachutes, balloons, and banners.

Similar restrictions are in place during this week's Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Flying a drone or unmanned aircraft within the restricted area during the DNC is against the law and violating the airspace could result in criminal or civil charges, the FAA said.

Only approved law enforcement, military and ambulance flights, and regularly scheduled commercial passenger and cargo carriers will be permitted within a 10-mile and a three-mile "inner core" of the convention venue.

Pilots of "non-regularly scheduled air carriers" such as general aviation and corporate jets must have parking reservations obtained from Atlantic Aviation for both Philadelphia International and Northeast Philadelphia Airports, the FAA said. Pilots must be on an active flight plan filed with the FAA and be in communication with air traffic control.
