FAA registers 300,000 drones

Nearly 300,000 recreational drone pilots registered their small unanned aircraft in the first 30 days after the registration rule took effect Dec. 21, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday.

Nearly 300,000 recreational drone pilots registered their small unanned aircraft in the first 30 days after the registration rule took effect Dec. 21, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday.

Because of the risk imposed by drones veering too close to airports, airplanes, and heavily populated areas, the FAA set up an online registration at www.faa.gov/uas/registration . The $5 registration fee, good for five years, was waived for the first month to encourage participation.

Hobbyists who already own a drone, weighing between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds, have until Feb. 19 to register. Owners of new drones must register before the first flight. Anyone flying a drone, without registering, after Feb. 19 could face a fine and posible criminal charges, the FAA said.
