NJ Transit proposes 9% fare hike

NJ Transit wants to boost bus and rail fares by an average of 9 percent, starting Oct. 1, and eliminate some routes beginning in September, the agency said Monday.

NJ Transit wants to boost bus and rail fares by an average of 9 percent, starting Oct. 1, and eliminate some routes beginning in September, the agency said Monday.

The moves are designed to close a $60 million budget gap, the statewide transit agency said.

Fares were last increased five years ago.

Hearings will be held next month on the proposed fare hikes and service reductions, with a session scheduled in Camden on May 19.

The agency's board is to vote on the increases July 8.

If approved as proposed, the increases mean a one-way trip between Philadelphia and Gloucester City would cost $4.25, up from the current $3.90, while the monthly fare would be $134, up from the current $123.

A one-way trip on the light rail River Line between Camden and Trenton would cost $1.60, up from the current $1.50, while the monthly fare would be $54, up from the current $50.

A train trip to New York City from Trenton or Hamilton would cost $16.25, up from the current $15.

The plan calls for the elimination of Route 318 bus service between Philadelphia and Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park in Jackson, and elimination of Route 419 bus service between Riverside and Burlington City.

The plan also proposes eliminating the last evening trip in each direction on the Route 463 bus between Woodbury and the Avandale park-and-ride stop.

The hearing scheduled for Camden will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in City Council chambers at City Hall, 520 Market St.

Comments on the proposed increases may also be sent by mail to Public Hearing Office, 1 Penn Plaza East, Newark, N.J. 07105, or made online at www.njtransit.com; or dropped off at NJ Transit customer service offices. Comments will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. May 21.
