PATCO stands to become a lot more Internet-user friendly by the summer.

The commuter rail line announced Thursday that its operations and maintenance committee had endorsed a proposal from Comcast Corp. to provide Xfinity WiFi in all 13 stations in New Jersey and Philadelphia.

The proposal will be considered by the Delaware River Port Authority board at its Jan. 21 meeting. If it is approved, Comcast projects, service will be available by summer.

Xfinity WiFi is a network of hot spots that allows users to connect while conserving usage on their cellphone data plans.

The WiFi coverage will be provided free to both Comcast customers, who can sign in with their Xfinity user IDs and passwords, and nonsubscribers, who can register with an e-mail address after they accept the terms of use.

"We're committed to improving our customers' experience," said John Hanson, PATCO president and chief executive officer of the DRPA. "We have listened to our customers and know that staying connected is important. This demonstrates our commitment to provide the amenities our customers want."

Comcast already provides WiFi at other transit stations, including those operated by SEPTA and NJ Transit.

Amalia O'Sullivan, vice president of Xfinity Internet, Comcast Cable, said: "Access to Xfinity WiFi at [PATCO] train platforms will enable our customers and noncustomers alike the ability to surf the Net, stream videos, and communicate with family and friends for no additional fee, thereby saving them money on their wireless bills."
