Obama intervenes to avert SEPTA rail strike

President Obama on Friday created a three-member board to mediate the long-running labor dispute between SEPTA and its Regional Rail locomotive engineers.

President Obama on Friday created a three-member board to mediate the long-running labor dispute between SEPTA and its Regional Rail locomotive engineers.

The creation of the presidential emergency board, which was requested by SEPTA this week, will avert a strike by engineers that could have started on Monday.

Obama's order will require SEPTA and the engineers to continue to operate as usual for 120 days from the effective date of the panel, which is 12:01 a.m. Monday. The term of a similar panel, created in June, expires at that time.
