SEPTA investigating fatal Sunday accident in Center City

SEPTA officials on Monday were still investigating why a 60-year-old homeless man was struck and killed by a Broad Street Line train on Sunday at the Walnut-Locust station.

"It's unclear how he got into the track area," said SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch. Witnesses said the man entered the station about six minutes before he was struck by a southbound train at 7:40 p.m., Busch said.

The man, whose identity was not released, apparently had been living at a nearby homeless shelter, Busch said.

The victim was declared dead at the scene.

Subway service between Walnut-Locust and Girard stations was halted for about three hours after the incident.
