Many air travelers in and out of Philadelphia already know this: For about a month now, Wi-fi Internet access has been free at PHL every day, not just on weekends. The airport made the official announcement a couple of weeks ago, a couple of weeks after it started.

Connect this to the AP story that ran in the Inquirer Travel section Sunday about airline customers not using Wi-fi on planes in-flight as much as airlines hoped or expected -- in part because it's free so many places on the ground.

Once again Philadelphia is way beyond the norm. Other than Amtrak and the airlines practicably nobody charges for WiFi. It's like charging people to turn on their radios. Then again how many small towns had Cell Phone lots at their airports long before PHL even thought of it? I ride to NYC with some frequency and always take the Bolt Bus. They've been providing WiFi - free - since they started up a couple of years ago and the cost of the trip is a fraction of what Amtrak charges (don't confuse Bold Bus with Mega Bus which is in the news today because a driver got lost driving from Toronto supposedly to Philadelphia - he ended up in Harrisburg.)

WiFi is free at Albuquerque, Denver and Oakland airports; they charge for it at Chicago/Midway (don't know about O'Hare).

In many/most(?) places around the world, internet access is free via wireless. It's just that here in the US, "free" is the antithesis of capitalism.
