Target Corp. is having a grand opening of two new small-format stores, in Northern Liberties and in Haddon Township, on Sunday as part of its plan to open four stores in the Philadelphia region this year. In the fall, the company will open a store at Broad Street and Washington Avenue, and another in Devon.

The store at 456 N. Fifth St. occupies 48,000 square feet, one of the company's small-format stores that it opens in "urban areas, dense suburban neighborhoods, and near college campuses," the company said. The store will include a CVS Pharmacy, a Starbucks, and a Target mobile and order pickup area. The Haddon Township store at 650 W. Cuthbert Blvd. will be of the same small-format model.

Target is using the smaller stores to broaden its brand. The sites help improve Target's online business because they serve as pickup points for orders. They also get the company into densely populated areas where real estate is more costly.

At the same time, suburban consumers are moving to mobile shopping with free delivery, reducing the need for more big-box stores.

With these openings, Target will have six small-format stores in the Philadelphia area. Existing stores include two locations in Center City, and ones in Roxborough and Fairmount.

"We are committed to bringing convenient shopping experiences to all guests in the greater Philadelphia area," Jeff McCandless, Target group vice President, said in a news release. "Reimagining existing stores and opening small-format stores will allow us to reach new guests while also delighting and inspiring current guests with the latest store design Target has to offer."

The company has grown to 41 stores across the region since it opened its first area store in 1997. It is also remodeling seven stores in the region and Joe Contrucci, senior vice president of stores and Joe Perdew, vice president of store design, explained in a company post what customers can expect.

"Think brighter lighting, a more modern feel and dynamic vignettes with the latest seasonal trends, exclusive brands, design partnerships and more for guests to discover as they spend time exploring our aisles," Contrucci said.

Perdew explained how some stores may get concrete floors, wood-plank walls and that materials like steel, glass and Target red may be incorporated into the design, "all to create a warm and inviting experience that's hip and cool."

The new store hours are: Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. in Haddon Township);
Saturday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
