Jessica and Alex Smith loved their Old City rental, but when it was time to buy their own place in 2008, HOA fees in the trendy neighborhood pushed them to expand their search area.

"We didn't mind heading a bit further south, as long as we could stay close to major roads and bridges," said Alex.

"So many people draw a hard line at Snyder Ave. for their threshold south," Jessica said, "when many of the blocks just south are far more friendly and accessible than the blocks just north."

The couple was surprised to find a home that checked everything on their wish list on Jackson Street, just one block south of Snyder.

"The house offered everything we wanted and needed, but in an unfamiliar neighborhood," Jessica said.

Inside, the home featured exposed brick, which reminded them of the character of their Old City apartment. There was also a skyline view from the master bedroom. Outside, Burke Park across the street meant no neighbors staring inside. Restriction-free street parking and free covered parking down the street made life easy for guests.

"We were quickly welcomed by a warm, tight group of neighbors and families," Jessica said. "My favorite part of the house is the strong sense of community."

"Our neighborhood was home to many Irish Italian families where were we were just as likely to see a brigade of Mummers strut by our front door as we were to see an ice cream man serving up soft-serve to all the neighborhood kids," said Alex.

The three-bedroom home features an updated kitchen, hardwood flooring throughout, and a bar in the finished basement. Off of the kitchen is a yard for entertaining.

The home is currently listed with Dominic Fuscia of Coldwell Banker Preferred for $249,000.

"The decision to sell has been a difficult break up for us," Jessica said. But business opportunities are forcing the couple to move. "We would very much like to return to the neighborhood," she said.
