When a distinguished architect buys and renovates a new home, odds are good the home will be a gem when it is finished.
Tony Atkin bought his Powelton home with his partner in 1982. The renowned architect of Atkin Olshin Schade Architects died in 2015, and the executrix of his estate, Shep Houston, said Atkin was attracted to the property because it was on a double lot.
"There was a lot next door with a gas station," Houston said. "They tore this down to create a private walled garden."
The station turned into a garage and the renovations began. The couple added a breakfast room and a mudroom with laundry that connected the home to the garage.
Houston said Atkin and his partner were already fans of the Powelton neighborhood when they bought the 2,338-square-foot home.
"They loved the neighborhood," she said. "They lived two blocks away for several years."
Houston, an architecture school classmate of Atkin's, said she already knew the house well before taking on the estate.
"I spent much time in the house for all the years he and his partner were there," she said. "It was a great party house because of the garden and the easy flow throughout the house."
The home features an open floorplan on the first floor, flowing into a large, eat-in kitchen that was recently renovated. The four bedrooms are spread over the second and third floors, and a spa bathroom includes a jetted soaking tub and a separate, frameless shower.
Houston said the lighting throughout the house helps make it special.
"There are large windows on three sides of the house," she said. "Every window either overlooks the garden or the park across the street."
The home is listed by Holly Mack-Ward for $625,000.
